Movie Review - Vanilla Sky

Greetings pals and gals! First off, apologies for my general awfulness at blogging of late; both my inconsistency and just general sloppyness (note to self: must get better). With that in mind I have decided to start regularly posting a movie review and suggestions on a Monday, hence the name: Movie Monday. Original and unexpected, I know. Stop your judgement though please, its simple, useful (in terms of me remembering how good certain films were) and hopefully will stick. Plus with my recent investments in Netflix, a new movie is at my fingertips at every second of every day! It is beyond me why I have not invested in an internet streaming media company before, especially for the high quality, easy to access, vast and inexpensive collection that it provides. So without further ado, here is this week's review.

So the time is 11.45pm on Saturday and I think to myself, "how about light-hearted romance film before I drift off to sleep". I'd also been scouring Netflix for all the Tom Cruise films they have because, well, look at him, he's beautiful, am I right ladies? I looked at the description and thought it sounded fine, so the play button was pressed. Well I had no idea what I was getting into and I was all the better for it! Funny thing was I was feeling a little tired so if I'd have known this one would have been a mind-boggler, I'd probably have not bothered at that time of night. But boy, am I glad I did.

I didn't even know it was a mystery, I went in a complete blank canvas! No regrets though, for with each twist and turn, I was pulled further and further into the plot. It's based on a Spanish film titled "Open your eyes", basically an English remake with some slightly different elements. If you like films that you have to use your brain, or like me, you like to try and be smart and figure out what happens before they spell it out for you, this film is perfect. For all of the around 5 times I thought "ah, I get it, that's what's going on." A whole new ingredient is thrown into the mix putting you back to square one. Or like me, just laying in bed mouthing "what the fridge?" or "eh?" to my laptop screen.

I don't want to give anything away for those of you who haven't seen it because its just better that way. But let me know if you figure it out in the first 5 minutes, I'll be dumbfounded, you clever clogs! And must be said, the acting was also mind blowing. Tom Cruise is really starting to gain utmost respect from me, he is definitely talented (as if his huge success is not enough proof). Also it was nice to see Cameron Diaz playing something a little different from most of the things I've seen her in. Bravo. The mise en scène and cinematography is so well done too! How it chops and changes, taking you from once place to another, not to mention the general pace of the movie was spot on. When you get over the initial establishment of characters and get comfortable, all is thrown. Then you get comfortable again, then you're thrown again! So exciting! Its one that I plan on watching again soon to see what more I can get from it. The subtle hints throughout; keep your eyes and ears open, stay awake and engaged, it all comes together in the end.

Definitely giving it a 5/5 stars. You could almost say it was so good, it was like a dream...

Give it a watch, let me know your thoughts below!

Don't forget to check back next Monday for another new review.
